2 more deaths reported as Isaac drenches Louisiana The storm that had been Hurricane Isaac crawled into the central U.S. on Friday, leaving behind a soggy mess in Louisiana and two newly reported deaths. Neighborhoods were underwater and even homes that stayed dry didn't have lights, air conditioning or clean water. It will be a few days before the soupy brown water recedes and people in flooded areas can return home. New Orleans itself was spared, thanks in large part to a levee system fortified after Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005. The city lifted its curfew but was hardly back to normal. Egypt's Morsi calls for intervention to end 'oppressive' Syria regime Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi criticized Syria’s "oppressive regime" Thursday at an international conference in Iran – one of President Bashar Assad's few remaining allies - and called for outside intervention to end the civil war. Morsi, a moderate Islamist, told a summit of non-aligned nations in Tehran that Assad’s government had “lost its legitimacy” and the international community had an “ethical duty” to help the Syrian people. CDC: More than 1,100 cases of West Nile reported through August The Centers for Disease Control said Wednesday this is shaping up to be the worst year ever for West Nile Virus infections and deaths in the U.S. The virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, is now to blame for 41 deaths across the country with more than 1,100 people infected -- and those numbers are expected to climb. The number of cases has risen dramatically in the past few weeks. CDC officials say numbers are alarming given there were only 25 cases reported nationwide this time last month. The only states that do not have reported cases of the virus are Hawaii, Alaska and Vermont. Terry Smith, 6 Other Suspects In Deputy Killings Linked To Extremist 'Sovereign Citizens' Group At least some of the seven people arrested in a fatal shootout with Louisiana deputies have been linked to violent anarchists on the FBI's domestic terrorism watch lists, a sheriff said Saturday. Detectives had been monitoring the group before Thursday's shootout in Laplace in which two deputies were killed and two more wounded, said DeSoto Parish Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle. His detectives and other law enforcement discovered the suspects were heavily armed adherents to an ideology known as the "sovereign citizens" movement.
