An employee at a Fresno, Calif., chicken processing center opened fire inside the facility Tuesday morning, killing two co-workers and injuring two others before killing himself, police said.

Lawrence Jones, 42, the suspected gunman and parolee, arrived at the plant just before his 5 a.m. shift. About three hours into his work day, as he was working near the cold storage part of the facility, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, Jerry Dyer, the Fresno police chief said at a morning news conference.

One of the victims is a 32-year-old male, who was fatally shot in the head inside the facility. The victims’ identities were not immediately released, pending family notification.

rom a suspected Israeli airstrike in Sudan to cyber warfare in the Gulf and a drone shot down over Israel, the largely hidden war between Iran and its foes seems heating up and spreading.

Despite months of speculation, most experts and governments believe the risk of a direct Israeli strike on Tehran's nuclear program stirring regional conflict has eased, at least for now. But all sides, it seems, are finding other ways to fight.

Hurricane Sandy death toll climbs above 110, N.Y. hardest hit 11/05/2012 Hurricane Sandy death toll climbs above 110, N.Y. hardest hit
The number of lives lost and families shattered from Hurricane Sandy continued to climb Saturday, with the death toll now at more than 110.

The number of lives claimed in New York from the super storm was reduced by one to 48, after medical examiners determined two deaths initially linked to the storm were not, and another body was found during the recovery effort.

Beware: Time is ripe for Hurricane Sandy scams 11/02/2012 Beware: Time is ripe for Hurricane Sandy scams
Investment scams and charity fraud crop up after every natural disaster. But Hurricane Sandy is the first U.S. catastrophe to occur in the social-media age.

When a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy occurs, there is an outpouring of relief from Americans who want to help. And they become easily vulnerable to fraud.

The latest outgrowth of social media is crowdsourced funding, or crowdfunding, which is a way to pool small donations on the Internet from large amounts of investors -- or people who want to support causes. It was approved by the JOBS Act, which was passed this year. Crowdfunding can't be used until next year for investments. But it can be used now for charities -- and, therefore, by scam artists looking to rip off the unwary.

Sandy's cost may hit $50B 10/31/2012 Sandy's cost may hit $50B
Superstorm Sandy will end up causing about $20 billion in damages and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm.

In the long run, the devastation the storm inflicted on New York City and other parts of the Northeast will barely nick the U.S. economy. That's the view of economists who say higher gas prices and a slightly slower economy in coming weeks will likely be matched by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to growth over time.

The short-term blow to the economy, though, could subtract about 0.6 percentage point from U.S. economic growth in the October-December quarter, IHS says. Retailers, airlines and home construction firms will likely lose some business.
