"WHOLE COMMUNITY" CONCEPT

In 2012, the National Domestic Preparedness Coalition opened the Homeland Security Community Network Member category to the community embracing the “whole community” concept to keep our communities safe and secure. The concept brings together responders and community members to make the whole community more resilient by: addressing issues that are important to the responder community and important to the community members that they serve; bringing together responders and community members to collectively plan; giving a voice to groups who may have been marginalized, including those with functional needs; increasing awareness to all community members, including the elderly, children and those with special needs regarding the prevention, preparedness, protection, response and recovery from all hazards ranging from Natural Disaster and terrorism to attacks against our children in their schools.

Funding Cuts are Penny Wise, Pound Foolish

Budget cuts and fiscal challenges have impacted all emergency responders across the country. As more and more is being asked of the men and women who serve and protect our communities, these same individuals are being told that their funding is being cut, or in some cases, eliminated.

The cuts are coming from all angles: the Federal government has arbitrarily eliminated over 50 percent of the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) communities for FY2011. Federal funding for local homeland security grants are seeing cuts much greater than any other Federal programs. FULL STORY
